The first pair of industrially manufactured children's knit tights were produced on flat-bed knitting machines or cotton patent flat-bed knitting machines, therefore the individual pieces had to be sewn together. In some cases, the feet had to be knit on separately with a special "footing" machine. Tights produced by this method can be recognized by the seams, which run laterally or backwards.
